Civil society organisations in the Niger-Delta region have called on militants in the region to give peace a chance.

The Niger Delta civil society coalition lamented that over fifteen years of work to restore peace in the region is on the verge of collapse.
The call was made at a joint media briefing in Port Harcourt by concerned stakeholders following the resurgence of militancy in the Niger Delta.
The Country Director of Social Democratic Network, INEMO SAMIAMA warned that the resurgence of violence in the Niger-Delta was not in the interest of the region. SAMIAMA observed that the rising cases of murder, piracy, cultism, kidnapping, vandalism and other forms of conflict has a long term negative effect on the region. However; the spokesperson for the civil society coalition appealed to the Federal Government to avoid the use of violence in addressing the threat posed by Niger Delta militants. He suggested the adoption of a long-term approach of peace building and conflict resolution in addressing the Niger-Delta concerns.INEMO SAMIAMA called on Niger Delta leaders to dialogue with the youth and also to act as role models for the younger generation.
Our correspondent VICTOR EZEAMA reports that the Civil Society Organisations advised the Niger-Delta Development Commission to partner with major stakeholders to effectively develop the region.
