Rights Group Raises Alarm Over Vigilante Groups' Illegal Activities in Rivers State
The Defense for Human Rights and Democracy, DHRD, has decried what it described as the continuous illegal detention and extortion of citizens by local vigilante groups in Rivers state.
The chairman of the human rights organization, Clifford Christopher in an interview with Todayfm, said local vigilante groups in some local government areas including Port Harcourt, were operating detention facilities, where members detain, torture, handcuff their victims and also collect money for bail from suspects without handing them over to the police.
He further alleged that the local security groups dabble in all kinds of matters including issues between husband and wife, land disputes and debt recovery.
Christopher who expressed worries over these actions said the local security outfits were not properly supervised by the Divisional Police Officers who are supposed to do so.
He further urged the Rivers State commissioner of police and the Director of State Security Service to commence discreet surveillance of offices of vigilante groups in Port Harcourt and other local government areas and ensure that anyone caught is the act is severely dealt with in accordance to the law.
