Civil Society Organisations operating within the Niger Delta are demanding the release of details of 2016 budgets of state governments in the region.

The demand was made at a round-table discussion in Port Harcourt, where participants expressed worries that only Cross River and Edo states had made their 2016 budgets public. The Coordinator of the Niger Delta Citizens and Budget Platform, KEN HENSHAW said citizens have the right to know what their state governments planned for their communities. HENSHAW said it was abnormal for the Rivers State government in particular, to begin spending funds under the 2016 Budget without letting the public know what goes to each community. He argued that an unpublished budget gives room for corruption.
KEN HENSHAW called on the governors of Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa-Ibom and Rivers states to publish their budgets to ensure public scrutiny.
