Flood-Prone Communities in Rivers State Urge Government to Take Proactive Measures
Flood-prone communities in Rivers State have urged the state government to adopt proactive measures to mitigate the effects of flooding in their areas.
Speaking in an interview with Today FM's Sandra Kenneth, the Engenni Youth President in Ahoada West Local Government Area, Onem Okenya, called on the government to establish Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in strategic locations within the LGA.
Okenya also appealed for the provision of emergency rescue boats, relief materials, and mattresses ahead of potential floods, expressing concern that delays could lead to greater disaster.
Similarly, the Community Development Committee Chairman of Okujiagu in Okrika Local Government Area of the state, Elijah Abbey, and Dagogo Achese, lamented that the lack of offshore protection has continued to devastate their community, leaving them vulnerable when floods occur.
They further noted that floods typically damage livelihoods and properties, emphasizing the urgent need for a permanent solution to the problem, as they are severely impacted during the rainy season.
