Professor Calls for Shift from Petrol to Solar Energy to Reduce Overdependence on PMS
A professor of Industrial Technical Education at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Professor ISAAC OGUNDU, has called for a shift from petrol as the sole source of energy to solar energy, in order to reduce overdependence on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly called petrol which has not yielded positive economic results.
Professor Ogundu made this appeal during an interview with Today FM’s Magnus Nwauwa, in response to the sudden hike in the pump price of petrol.
He explained that the increase has not only affected transportation costs but has also negatively impacted the overall cost of living.
Ogundu, who is a member of the university's twelve-member governing council and head of the Ndele Campus, pointed out that technical and vocational education has been significantly disrupted due to the lack of energy to power essential equipment.
Regarding the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its distribution system, Professor OGUNDU criticized the organization for exacerbating the situation by allowing middlemen to hijack the distribution process.
He suggested that NNPC should deliver products directly from the depots to filling stations to prevent artificial scarcity and unnecessary price hikes, while also addressing corruption at the borders.
