The Federal Government, through the National Bureau of Statistics says one hundred and thirty million Nigerians are poor.

In its 2022 Multi-dimensional Poverty Index Survey released yesterday, the NBS said the figure represents sixty three per cent of the nation’s population.

It added that the poverty index is mostly experienced in rural areas especially in the north with women and children being the most affected.

The survey conducted by the NBS, the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative showed that over fifty per cent of children across the country are affected by poverty.

While the multidimensional poverty index stood at twenty seven per cent in Ondo State, the figure is estimated at ninety percent in Sokoto state.
