In a bid address the menace of insecurity on inland waterways, the federal Government has been advised to support efforts of the National Inland Waterways Authority by deploying special security tactics and indigenous knowledge to inland waterways.

A Maritime Expert, Joseph Awodeha in an interview with Today FM said the advise became necessary following the recent abduction and release of Maritime workers in Rivers State.

He said just like the NIMASA Deep Blue Sea project to secure Nigerian waters up to the Gulf of Guinea, same efforts should be made to tackle the challenges faced on the inland waters.

Awodeha who hailed the level of success recorded since the launch of the Maritime waterways protection program in June, said measure should be put in place to ensure that the project is not abandoned

You may recall that five members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and three others were seized by gunmen last week on their way from Kula area in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area .
