The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, has urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to enact Laws that will make the power sector in the state more effective. Acting Chief Executive Officer of PHEDC, MATTHEW EDEBIE made the appeal when members of the House Committee on Power visited the office of the company on Moscow road in Port Harcourt in exercise of their oversight function.EDEBIE said issues of rights of way, corruption, vandalism, energy theft and constant harassment of PHEDC staff by indigenes are some of the challenges hindering the effective generation of power in the state. He said a law with serious punishment for the electricity offenders will enable the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company meet the expectations of the people.
Meanwhile, Chairman House Committee on Power and member representing Bonny Constituency, ABINYE PEPPLE appealed to the authority of the PHEDC to check the problem of over-billing in the state. PEPPLE also assured that the State House of Assembly will look into the request of the Port Harcourt Distribution company for the house to enact a law to make the company operate effectively. Correspondent VICTOR EZEAMA reports that the Port Harcourt Distribution Company currently distributes power to over five million consumers in Rivers state alone.
