The pro-Biafra agitation in the South-East and parts of the South-South geopolitical zones continues to generate concerns, with religious institutions calling for immediate intervention by the Federal Government. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria wants the Federal Government to set machinery in motion to resolve the issues bordering on the marginalization and neglect of the South-East and South-South geo-political zone as a means to stem the rising tide of the agitation. The call was contained in a communiqué adopted at the end of the General Assembly Executive Committee of the Church held in Calabar, Cross River State. According to the communiqué obtained by our correspondent, the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria said the pro-Biafra agitations posed a serious threat to the unity of Nigeria as a nation.
The Church also called on those behind the agitation to give peace a chance in the overall interest of a unified Nigeria.
The PCN clergy said the recent acknowledgement by Nigeria’s Vice President, YEMI OSINBAJO that the worst problem plaguing the people of the South-East geo-political zone is the failed network of roads underscored the neglect by the Federal Government of the South-East zone in terms of developmental projects. The Church listed such major failed roads in the South-East and South-South as the Onitsha-Enugu, Enugu-Port Harcourt, Owerri-Port Harcourt, Umuahia-Arochukwu as well as the Aba-Calabar, Calabar-Ogoja, Uyo-Port Harcourt and the East-West Road. It identified other failed roads in other parts of the country to include the Shagamu-Ore-Benin, Benin-Auchi-Okene-Lokoja and Mokwa-Jebba highways.  The PCN General Assembly urged the Federal Government to take advantage of the present dry season to repair the roads and also improve on other modes of transport in the country, stressing that a good transport system would stimulate socio-economic activities and help to grow the economy. The communiqué was jointly signed by the Prelate and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, Most Reverend Professor EMELE UKA and the Principal Clerk, Reverend ESEME WILLIAM.
Furthermore, the PCN Clergy called for the implementation of the report of the 2014 National Conference which addressed a wide range of problems, such as resource control, equitable distribution of power among the component groups, national security and the secular status of Nigeria.
In a statement released by the Director of Information and Public Affairs of the PCN General Assembly, Reverend KALU EME, the Church urged the Government to provide a conducive environment for investments through the provision of good roads, water, security and a steady electricity supply.
