Hundreds of people dressed in white t-shirts were mobilized earlier today around Isaac Boro Park area of Mile One in Port Harcourt. The mission of the group in white was not clear, but our correspondent gathered that the individuals are supporters of the People’s Democratic Party.
It was gathered that the individuals arrived in Port Harcourt from different local government areas across Rivers State.
However; it appeared that the move was an attempt to counter the memorial procession planned by the All Progressives Congress in honor of victims of political violence in Rivers State during the last general elections.
Our correspondent UCHENDU EJIOWHOR reports that the APC supporters who are dressed in black t-shirts have just left the party’s secretariat on a procession towards Aba Road. Security is also on high alert in the Rivers State capital to prevent a clash between the two sides. APC governorship candidate, DAKUKU PETERSIDE and former senator of Rivers South-East, MAGNUS ABE, led the procession, with other APC chieftains.
The procession terminated at the Port Harcourt Polo Club in GRA Phase Two, where a memorial service is being held to wrap up the solemn programme. Addressing the gathering; State Chairman of the APC, DAVIE IBIAMU-IKANYA, called for the implementation of the report of the Professor CHIDI ODINKALU’s panel that investigated acts of political violence in the state. Also speaking, Senator MAGNUS ABE urged APC supporters in Rivers State to remain courageous and expect that justice would be done on the killings that trailed the last elections. Some family members of the murdered victims also recounted their experiences in an interview with our correspondent.
Our correspondents have reported pockets of attacks on APC supporters who trooped out to join the Black Day procession. Beginning from the Isaac Boro Park; our correspondent reports that some passersby in black t-shirts were molested around the Mile One Market by the group of men in white t-shirts who were earlier dispersed by security operatives. APC supporters who were being conveyed to Port Harcourt were also ambushed at Igwuruta Junction, resulting in clashes. Other participants, who managed to find their way to the Polo Club in GRA, complained that convoys of party members from as much as ten local government areas were ambushed and attacked in a bid to prevent them from getting to Port Harcourt. An APC Chieftain from Omuma Local Government Area, GODSGIFT NWANKWO, also confirmed to our correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA their members were attacked and abducted by armed thugs on the road leading to Etche.
