The Rivers state council of the Nigeria Labour Congress has joined in criticizing the statement credited to the Nigeria Governors forum over their inability to sustain the current national minimum wage for workers. The factional Chairman of NLC in Rivers state, Comrade WILLIAMS ADAH said the governors are merely playing a trick on the leadership of the Union bearing in mind that the current minimum wage is due for an upward review. ADAH who was speaking in an interview with correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA wondered why the governors would want Nigeria workers to bear the brunt of the economic set back of the country, when workers’ salaries were not increased when the economy was perceived to be booming. He advised the Governors to cut down their allowances, look inwards and find ways to improve the economic situation in their various states.
On his part a public Affairs analyst ISAAC WONWU said the state governments should be thinking of an upward review of workers’ salaries stressing that the current minimum wage can no longer sustain them. ISAAC WONWU also called for the removal of the fuel subsidy but warned that adequate alternative must be made reduce the effect on Nigerians.
