Students of the School of Medical Imaging Technology at the College of Health Management and Technology in Rivers State have staged a protest at the office of the Provost, Peace Chigozirim-Amadi, over grievances affecting their academic welfare.
The protesting students demanded a reduction in school fees and called for the removal of their Head of Department, Egba Ifeanyichukwu Nwachukwu.
They alleged that their actions were prompted by what they described as exploitation by the HOD, as well as concerns surrounding his academic qualifications, which they claim have negatively impacted the institution’s reputation.
The students further expressed dissatisfaction that a non-professional in the field of Medical Imaging Technology is heading the department, insisting that the development is against standard practice.
One of the students, who spoke anonymously, revealed that the situation has forced some students to abandon the programme, stressing the need for urgent intervention by the government and relevant authorities.
In response, the Provost, Peace Chigozirim-Amadi, expressed displeasure over the circumstances that led to the protest but assured the students that steps are being taken to address the issues raised.
She also highlighted that some reductions in fees have already been implemented as part of efforts to ease the burden on students.
