Reports say eleven soldiers were killed and five others wounded in the attack by militants.
The Malian army has sent reinforcements to the area to track down the attackers and assess the damage.
The Defence Ministry also confirmed that the attack took place on Sunday morning, while some soldiers who fled the attack ended up across the border in Burkina Faso.
A defence ministry spokesman said it is not clear who carried out the raid, but did not ruling out jihadists, following the rise of related activities in the area in recent times.
