Ladan Bosso explains why Rohr has refused to pick home based players for the Super Eagles

The president of the Nigerian Football Coaches Association, Ladan Bosso has given reasons why Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr has refused to pick players from the Nigeria Professional Football league (NPFL) for the national team.

Gernot Rohr has been under heavy criticism for neglecting players from the local league with NFF president Amaju Pinnick, in a recent interview, stressing that Rohr must reside in the  country so as to “nurture” players from the league as part of the terms of his new contract.

Despite the criticism with some stakeholders in the sport saying Rohr has not done enough to deserve a new contract, Bosso said:

Gernot Rohr has extremely done well”, He started. “The only issue is that he has not been encouraging the local lads in the national team. As a technical adviser of the Nigeria national team, you are to put glamour in the local league. From one center to the other, you find those players that are extremely doing well in the league. I cannot see any reason why in Nigeria we [were] lacking strikers those days and you cannot go and pick maybe the highest goal scorer, second highest goal scorer, third highest goal scorer in the league. You are supposed to be inviting them so that they now get polished, one time or the other they gradually come into the team. By the time they start moving around with those foreign based players, I think that will give them confidence. That is the only fault I [find] in Gernot Rohr”.

Bosso who led Nigeria U-20 national team to the 2007 world youth championship in Canada on the other hand excused Rohr, saying that players from the local league will not yield immediate result if incorporated into the super eagles set up.

Maybe the pressure on him to get the result because going to the league, sometimes there’s no certainty on all these of our home based players. Those players playing in Europe are already nurtured. We always look at it that we need more time to work on the Nigerian players (in the Nigerian league) before they can eventually give you what you are looking for and the pressure they’ll put on him, he might be thinking that he has no time to work on the home based players so that they can now level up with those ones in Europe because the Europe based players are already finished product”, said Bosso in an exclusive interview with Sport Attack of TodayFM.

The former Head coach of Gombe united and Wikki Tourist however argued that if given proper development, local coaches can do better.

All we are looking for; all we are agitating for is development. If you develop our coaches, they’ll give the result. How many coaches in Nigeria can sponsor themselves to go for self-development abroad where they can see better facilities and better training or developmental facilities in Europe? How many of us can do that? So, the problem of Nigerian coaches is the lack of development. We have to develop ourselves as coaches. If you can develop Nigerian coaches, they can do better because we can always resist, we are used to the terrain, [and] we sacrifice a lot of things. We are always very creative.” Bosso noted.

Pinnick had confirmed, in a television interview on Monday 6th April, that Rohr will receive a contract renewal offer “within the next one week to ten days” but emphasized that the Franco-German coach must accept the terms of his new contract which stipulates that Rohr must accept to be paid in Naira; must live in Nigeria and must see local league matches with a view to developing players therein.

Gernot Rohr’s contract expires by June 2020.
