The gesture was extended to BIDEN by President BARACK OBAMA as part of final ceremonies to mark the end of his tenure after two terms of eight years.
Reports say BIDEN was brought to tears as he listen to President OBAMA sing his praise for his faith in fellow Americans, love of country and his lifetime of service.
OBAMA noted that BIDEN remained the best possible choice, not just for him, but for the American people.
In his response, JOE BIDEN announced his intention to remain active in Democratic Party politics.
The award comes as both OBAMA and BIDEN prepare to leave office when DONALD TRUMP is inaugurated on 20th January.
