Jerzy Janowicz and Albert Ramos-Vinolas are the highest profile players to win their first-round matches at the Hamburg Open yesterday.
World No 51 Janowicz, the big-serving Pole, defeated Taro Daniel 6-4 6-3 to safely secure his passage into the next round.
Ramos-Vinolas, four places lower on the ATP’s rankings, edged Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 7-6 in an all-Spanish contest.
Rafael Nadal is the top-seeded player in the tournament and will open his campaign against Fernando Verdasco today although he slipped to a doubles match defeat yesterday.
He teamed with Spanish compatriot Jaume Munar but fell 6-4 6-2 to Italian pair Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli.
