It Is Unconstitutional for a President to Remove a Governor — VP Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that it is unconstitutional for a sitting President to remove a state Governor from office under any circumstances.

Shettima made the assertion on Thursday at the public presentation of a book authored by former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke, held in Abuja.

Recalling his own experience as Governor of Borno State during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, Shettima revealed that it was Adoke’s legal counsel that prevented former President Goodluck Jonathan from removing him from office.

“The advice given by Mohammed Adoke was the saving grace that ensured I remained in office despite the intense pressure and insecurity at the time,” Shettima said, emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional provisions.

His comments come amid growing public debate over the political crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara is currently out of office following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu — a move critics have described as controversial and potentially unconstitutional.
