The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project raised the concern, against the backdrop of World Environment Day, observed annually on June 4.
HYPREP, in a statement by its Head, Communications Kpoobari Nafo, noted that these non-biodegradable materials can stay in the soil and water for years causing harm to living things in the environment.
It said drains are blocked, resulting in flash flooding of cities, submerging homes, displacing people, and exposing them to water borne diseases.
HYPREP said it is working tirelessly to rid Ogoni coastlines of oil spill and the intruding plastics that gang up with it to pollute the waterways, saying it will not rest until the coastlines of Ogoni are restored to their natural state.
The Commission said it has approval from the Federal Executive Council for the award of shoreline remediation contracts being the clean-up of UNEP undocumented hydrocarbon polluted sites in Ogoniland, a joint effort with the rest of the world to find a solution to the pollution caused by plastics, of which crude oil is a base material for its production.
The 2023 theme for the World Environment Day Celebration is ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution.’
