In a significant alert, the Federal Government has issued forecasts concerning heavy rains and potential flooding across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, announced that communities in coastal and riverine areas, particularly in the South-South geopolitical zone, should prepare for considerable flooding as a consequence of rising sea levels.
The states identified as high-risk for flooding include Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, along with the Federal Capital Territory.
Officials advise residents in these areas to take necessary precautions, including securing property and staying informed about weather updates. The government stresses the importance of disaster preparedness in mitigating the impact of the anticipated heavy rains and flooding. Further guidelines on safety measures will be communicated as the situation develops.
