FG Approves ₦140,000 Monthly Salary Top-Up for Professors, Readers — Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has announced the approval of a ₦140,000 monthly salary top-up for lecturers in the professorial cadre, following a landmark agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Speaking on a current affairs programme, the minister said the allowance would apply to full professors and readers who are in full-time employment in public universities. According to him, eligible lecturers will receive the additional monthly payment as part of measures agreed under the new deal reached with ASUU.

Alausa explained that the salary enhancement is aimed at improving the welfare of senior academics, boosting morale and addressing long-standing concerns over remuneration in the university system. He noted that the agreement reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to stabilising the academic calendar and strengthening tertiary education.

The minister added that the implementation framework for the allowance is already in place, assuring that the payment would commence as scheduled once administrative processes are concluded. He also urged university lecturers to reciprocate the gesture by maintaining industrial harmony and focusing on quality teaching, research and mentorship.

The agreement is expected to ease tensions between the government and ASUU, which have often led to prolonged industrial actions that disrupt academic activities across the country.
