The European Union will hold emergency talks on Tuesday to address the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta following growing tensions between Spain and several member states.
The meeting comes after 22 EU countries issued a joint letter calling for coordinated action and stronger protection of the bloc’s external borders, following the arrival of about 60,000 migrants from Morocco into Ceuta.
Spain criticised the response of some member states, describing it as “selfish, polarising and unlawful,” after Italy suspended the EU’s border-free Schengen arrangement with Spain. The move was supported by Finland and Denmark.
EU leaders are expected to discuss measures to manage the crisis and strengthen cooperation on migration and border security.
