President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed delegates to conference of the International Press Institute holding in Abuja, with a charge to guard against the spread of fake news.
President Buhari observed that the changing media landscape, the explosion of the social media and the rapidly evolving new technology have had a profound impact on media business and media practice.
The President said it was satisfying that the Institute has chosen an appropriate theme for the conference, which emphasizes is: “Why Good Journalism Matters: Quality Media for Strong Societies.”
He said in a world where the borderline between hate speech and free speech has become blurred, good journalism matters.
President Buhari said in an environment where fake news dwarfs investigative reporting, good journalism matters.
He said for survival in an increasingly competitive field, good journalism would help to promote good governance.
The coast has been cleared for former Governor of Edo State, Adam Oshiomhole, to run unopposed for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress.
There were three other contenders running against Oshiomhole, including Clement Ebiri of Cross River State and Osereimhen Osunbor, who is also a former Governor of Edo State.
Ebiri announced his withdrawal from the race last night; a day after Osunbor stepped down to endorse the candidacy of Oshiomhole.
Before now, the fourth candidate - Ibrahim Emokpaire who is from Edo State but based overseas, had withdrawn his candidacy on the 12th of June.
The withdrawal of Ebiri, Osunbor and Emokpaire comes ahead of the National Convention of the APC, which would hold in Abuja tomorrow.
Meanwhile; the National Convention Committee of the APC has denied alleged compilation of a list of preferred candidates that would be adopted by delegates at the convention.
Just like the Secretary of the Committee, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba had said, Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State, who is the Chairman of the committee, also repeated that there was nothing like a “Unity List” to be adopted at the convention.
Senegalese-born US-based singer, Akon, has unveiled a plan to build what he calls a "crypto city" in Senegal.
Akon’s plan is a real life futuristic environment styled after the fictional Wakanda city in the “Black Panther” movie.
The Crypto City is apparently to be situated a short drive from Senegal’s capital city, Dakar.
The singer also revealed at the Cannes Lions Festival that he was planning to release a new crypto currency named after him.
The Department of State Services has announced the arrest of scores of suspected criminals by its agents in different operations nationwide.
These include suspected kidnappers, cultists, armed robbers and terrorists who were arrested in joint operations involving the DSS and sister security agencies from March till date.
Two members of a dreaded gang of kidnappers that goes by the name "Basalube" were arrest at Karu village in Abuja, while five members of another kidnapping syndicate were arrested in Calabar, Cross River State on 27th of March.
The Calabar suspects identified as Simeon Paul, Emmanuel Anna Etim, Eric John Out, Famous Eket Oleke and Felix Bassey Eshet were allegedly caught with one AK-Forty-Seven rifle; one Mossberg Pump Action rifle and fifty-five rounds of ammunition, among other items.
DSS operatives also arrested a suspected kidnapping kingpin in Ogbomosho, Osun State over the abduction of a clergyman at Ibillo, Edo State, and recovered five Pump Action rifles and nine loaders from him.
Investigation of that incident led to the arrest of suspected gunrunners identified as UMAR Abdullahi and Hassan Ahmed, at Ishua town, in Akoko-South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State, with five Pump Action rifles recovered from them.
Bashiru Adams and Rufai Sajo were also arrested for allegedly operating a terrorist cell at Kukuntu village, within Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Another suspect identified as Umar Dogo was also arrested at Muda Lawal Market in Bauchi town for allegedly belonging to another budding cell of so-called Islamic State in West Africa.
DSS spokesperson, Tony Opuiyo, disclosed in a statement that the suspects were discovered to have concluded plans to not only perpetuate the ideals of the terrorist movement in the area, but to also collaborate with Boko Haram in carrying out violent attacks on innocent persons.
In connection to the alleged plot, security operatives also tracked down and arrested Adamu Hassan and Abubakar Abubakar who are said to be experts on Improvised Explosive Devices.
Mohammed Saleh and Iliyasu Abubakar were also arrested in Gassol and Ardo Local Government Areas of Taraba State on suspicion of membership of the Boko Haram terrorist group and alleged involvement in cattle rustling.

The European Union has made good its threat to launch retaliatory trade tariffs against the United States
The EU has introduced duties on two point eight billion euros-worth of US goods, with effect from today.
Tariffs are imposed on products such as bourbon whiskey, motorcycles and orange juice.
European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said duties imposed by the US on the EU go against all logic and history.
Meanwhile; India is also planning to unleash higher taxes on twenty-nine products imported from the US, including some agricultural goods, steel and iron products.
The new retaliatory duties against the wide-ranging US tariffs will come into effect from 4th August and will affect US almonds, walnuts and chick peas, among other products.
