NASS IS NOT UNITED - JIBRIN

Wednesday, 06 June 2018 07:53

A division appears to have emerged among members of the National Assembly following the intensified faceoff between the lawmakers and the executive arm of government.

Hours after the National Assembly rose from a historic joint closed-door executive session, where far-reaching decisions were adopted, a section of the parliament has come out to discountenance the resolutions.

A member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, gave this indication in a statement released on behalf of the Parliamentary Support Group of the Senate and House of Representatives.

JIBRIN stated that almost all the members and senators who spoke at the Joint Executive Session are of the People’s Democratic Party, while members of the All Progressives Congress declined joining the discussion to avoid a rowdy confrontation.

JIBRIN also excused the Speaker of the House of Representatives for tactically refusing to make any comment at the session even after the Senate President took time to explain the issues, which he said were mostly personal.

The lawmaker from Kano State also stated that it was disturbing and raised questions of pre-determined intentions that the adopted resolutions were drafted by Rasak Atunwa of the House of Representatives from Kwara State.

The money laundering trial of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Sir Kenneth Kobani, has been stalled at the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

Kobani is standing trial alongside another chieftain of the PDP, Samuel Okpoko , over a seven hundred and fifty million naira fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accused both men of receiving the money from the multimillion dollars that was allegedly looted from the government treasury during the past PDP Administration.

The EFCC claims the money was shared among chieftains of the party and electoral officers through former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani  Allison-Madueke, with a view to influence the 2015 elections.

The matter was expected to resume yesterday but it suffered another adjournment because of the absence of Justice Balkisu  Aliyu.

No reason was given for the absence of the trial judge, and our correspondent Victor Ezeama reports that other courts within the Federal High Court complex also did not sit today.

The money laundering trial of Sir Kenneth Kobani and , Samuel Okpoko was subsequently adjourned to 24th of September.

You will recall that Sir Kenneth Kobani and , Samuel Okpoko had pleaded not guilty to the charges against them and were granted bail to tune of fifty million naira each.
