The lead engineer overseeing the ongoing desilting of drainage channels at the Rumuwoji axis near Mile One Market has described the level of blockage in the water channel as severe.
Friday Ugada said years of neglect and the persistent dumping of waste in unauthorized locations are largely responsible for the recurring flooding in the area.
According to him, the underground drainage system, which should ideally be cleared every six months, has not been desilted for over ten years, leading to the massive accumulation of debris.
Ugada disclosed that the government is planning to extend the clearing exercise from the Okija stretch through the Mile One axis as part of efforts to address the flooding challenge.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the Rumuwoji Mile One Market has pledged to monitor the activities of traders to prevent further blockage of the drainage system.
Vice Chairman of the market, Jude Chinedu, and the Woman Leader of the Yoruba community, Nurat Gambari, expressed appreciation to Governor Siminalayi Fubara for initiating the desilting exercise and coming to the aid of residents and traders in the area.
