An energy expert, Emeka Ojoko, has warned Nigerians to brace for more collapses of the national power grid, attributing the situation to structural weaknesses in the country’s electricity system.
Ojoko, in an interview, said Nigeria currently operates on a single national grid, unlike Western countries that use interconnected grids. He explained that interconnected grids provide flexibility, ensuring that faults in one component do not lead to total system failure.
According to him, the frequent collapse of the national grid can only be effectively addressed if states are allowed to establish their own power generation systems and also participate actively in electricity distribution.
Ojoko added that decentralising power generation and distribution would reduce pressure on the national grid and improve efficiency in power supply nationwide. He further disclosed that the national grid has already collapsed twice this year, warning that without urgent reforms, the trend may continue.
