A State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ruled that Jephthah College acted wrongly by denying one of its students, Emmanuel Chukwuma Uzorna, the opportunity to sit for the National Examination Council (NECO) examination in 2023.
Delivering judgment in the case, Justice Beauty Okere awarded ₦10 million in damages against the school.
Speaking to journalists after the ruling, counsel to the student, Orijiakor Sylvester, commended the court for what he described as a fair judgment.
In his reaction, the father of the student, Ibe Chibueze, said the ruling would serve as a lesson to other schools.
He also called on the Rivers State Government to closely monitor the activities of private schools to prevent similar incidents in the future.
