Burial rites have also been performed at the mining pit, six days after it collapsed, as rescue workers gave up hope of finding the bodies of those trapped.
Ghana’s Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister BENITO OWUSU BIO told reporters that the pit would be sealed up to ensure that nobody can reach that part again.
Reports say Chinese nationals are largely encouraging illegal mining in Ghana, which has been a source of concern to the authorities, both for safety reasons and its destructive impact on the environment.
