A coalition of civil society groups and community-based organizations has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) for ongoing efforts to improve waste management across Port Harcourt and other parts of the state.
The coalition said the commendation followed an assessment exercise conducted across 72 designated waste collection zones operated by RIWAMA. According to the group, the evaluation was prompted by recent media comments on waste management in the state.
Findings from the exercise revealed that RIWAMA and its contractors are actively engaged in waste collection and disposal across the state. The coalition noted that although more resources and manpower are still required, the agency’s current operations have made a visible impact and are contributing to the restoration of Rivers State’s image as the Garden City.
The group warned against the politicization of waste management issues, urging individuals and organizations to support RIWAMA’s activities rather than use the sector to discredit the state government.
In its statement, the coalition also cautioned residents, traders, cart pushers and waste collectors to comply strictly with RIWAMA regulations, including dumping refuse only between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., avoiding road medians and using only approved waste receptacles.
The coalition, through its spokesman, Nasigba Peterside, called for collective cooperation from all stakeholders to sustain a cleaner and healthier environment in Rivers State.
