Atiku Warns of Repression Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned that Nigeria risks heading into the 2027 general elections under a climate of repression, cautioning that continued crackdowns on dissent could undermine the conduct of free and fair polls.

Atiku raised the concern while reacting to the arrest of Abubakar Salim Musa, a young Nigerian whose detention was made public on Sunday by Amnesty International Nigeria.

Citing the rights group, the former vice president said the charges against Musa lacked credibility, describing the arrest as part of a broader pattern of alleged misuse of state institutions to silence opposing views.

He stressed that suppressing dissent poses a serious threat to democratic values and called for respect for fundamental human rights as the country moves closer to the next general elections.
