The proposed “Bill for a Law to Prohibit Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing in Akwa Ibom State” is intended to protect the lives and properties of people living in the state.
During plenary yesterday, the bill sponsored by the representative of Essien Udim State Constituency, Sir NSE NTUEN and eleven others scaled
through second reading.
Leading the debate on the bill, Sir NTUEN noted that the legislation seeks to prohibit uncontrolled grazing of cattle and other ruminants, as well as check the destruction of food crops on farmland caused by grazing.
Other lawmakers who made contribution; unanimously supported the bill, which they described a people-oriented and timely because of reports of attacks on farming communities across Nigeria by Fulani herdsmen.
In his ruling; the House of Assembly Speaker; ONOFIOK LUKE commended the sponsors of the bill; adding that the net stage would be to subject the proposed legislation to public hearing to enable the general public make inputs.
In the meantime; the Akwa Ibom State Anti-Grazing Bill has been committed to the House of Assembly joint Committees on Agriculture and Natural Resources, as well as Environment and Mineral Resources for further legislative work.
The Committees have also been given three weeks to complete their assignment and submit a report.
