Justice GABRIEL KOLAWOLE declared that the fifteen-man panel set up by the Inspector General of Police, IBRAHIM IDRIS, was illegal.
Justice KOLAWOLE made the pronouncement based on a suit filed by the Rivers State Government and Governor NYESOM WIKE.
The Judge declared that the police panel was unknown to law because it lacked constitutional backing, and therefore invalidated the report of the panel.
However; Justice KOLAWOLE acknowledged that the Police Act allows the police to investigate allegations of crime, but said it would require presidential assent for the police to delegate power to another prosecutorial agency.
