The French government made the call in a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council on Monday. France called the council meeting to discuss what has been dubbed as the sores violence in Burundi in ten years. French Deputy Ambassador to the UN ALEXIS LAMEK said France was extremely worried by what is going on in Burundi at the moment. He noted an increase of political violence and extremely alarming ethnically-based hate speech. The latest incidents include the killing of nine people, including a UN staff, who were shot dead in a bar in the capital Bujumbura.
The crisis began in April in form of protest against the decision by President PIERRE NKURUNZIZA to seek a third term in office. Reports say government forces have been searching houses for weapons in opposition neighborhoods following an ultimatum for the surrender of illegal arms. The United States had warned about imminent civil war following the government move, while the President of neighboring Rwanda has also called for restraint.
