Labour: Relations between Rivers govt, civil servants gets more frostier.

Civil servants reported for duty at the State Government Secretariat in Port Harcourt earlier today only to be greeted with police patrol vans deployed in the premises.

Our correspondent gathered the police deployment at the secretariat was meant to secure a venue for a meeting between the workers and the State Head of Service, RUFUS GODWIN.

Subsequently; workers who were invited to the meeting with the Head of Service were subjected to thorough checks, including showing proof of their status as civil servants.

Our correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA was also able to establish that the meeting was called by the Head of Service to enable him respond to allegations against him by the leadership of the Labour Movement in Rivers State.

During the interaction; RUFUS GODWIN dismissed an allegation that he had taken possession of a federal mortgage loan for workers.

GODWIN said he could not sign the agreement for the loan because of stringent conditions attached to the package.

He disclosed that the Rivers State Government was already constructing an estate for workers around Akpajo area of Eleme, which he said would be made easily accessible.

The Head of Service also denied influencing the queries issued to some labour leaders in the state over the proposed health insurance scheme of the state government.

However; RUFUS GODWIN noted that the labour leaders did not properly convey the proposed health insurance policy to the workers, which he said was the reason the rejected the scheme.

GODWIN further accused some of the labour leaders of being appendages of the last administration who have resolved to always criticize the policies of the present government.
