Former Commissioner for Agriculture in Rivers State, EMMA CHINDA, has gone to court seek an order against the investigation of activities of the ministry under his leadership. CHINDA approached the Rivers State High Court for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Commission of Inquiry and the Commissioner of Police from inviting, arresting or requiring him to appear before the panel. Just as CHINDA approached the court today, the Chairman of the panel, Justice GEORGE OMERIJI issued an order compelling him to appear for questioning.
CHINDA is mentioned in the disbursement of an alleged four billion naira agricultural loan facility obtained by the state government from the Central Bank of Nigeria. During a brief session on the second day of proceedings by the Commission of Inquiry sitting in Port Harcourt; Justice OMERIJI also ordered the appearance of former local government chairmen that served during the immediate-past administration.
Justice OMEREJI gave the order based of a request by counsel to the Commission, ZACHEUS ADANGOR, who want them to answer questions relating to the alleged four billion naira agricultural grant. Justice OMEREJI granted that the order of summons be published in local newspapers for wider publicity in the interest of justice and fair hearing.
Correspondent VICTOR EZEAMA reports that the Chairman also noted that it was too early to involve the police in the activities of the Commission.
