This followed the third and final reading of the bill on the floor of the Senate chambers, after a clause-by-clause consideration during plenary today.
According to the provisions of the Bill, the Nigerian Peace Corps is to be established as an agency under the Ministry of Interior.?
Based on the approved recommendations, the head of the Nigerian Peace Corps shall be addressed as Commandant-General; with provisions for six Deputy Commandants-General and six Assistant Commandants-General drawn from the six geopolitical zones across the country.?
The Chairman of Senate Committee on Interior, Senator BAYERO NAFADA from Gombe North, said the legislation is also intended to empower, develop and provide alternative employment for Nigerian youths through engagement in humanitarian services.
In his ruling, the Senate President, BUKOLA SARAKI said the Senate is only providing a stronger framework for the Peace Corps, which has already been in existence.
