Senate wants FG to review its N500bn Social Intervention programme.

The Senate wants government to incorporate a manual registration of beneficiaries of the programme from local government wards across Nigeria.

The resolution by the Senate was reached against the backdrop of the pitfalls of such intervention schemes in the past.

Our correspondent JAMES IGAH reports that the resolution was adopted based on a motion sponsored by Senator ALI NDUME of Borno South.

Leading the debate, Senator NDUME observed that the social intervention scheme is required to lift the people out of poverty in view of the prevailing economic situation in the country.

He said the overriding concern of the National Assembly should be the insistence on a proper framework before approval of the scheme.

Other senators who lend their opinion on the matter stressed the need to make the social intervention scheme far-reaching and all encompassing.

In his remarks, the Senate President BUKOLA SARAKI, charged the relevant committees to work with the executive to ensure the success of the Social Intervention scheme.

Senator SARAKI noted that despite the good intentions of the programme, the five billion naira might not achieve the desired results if not properly applied.

The Senate also resolved that a clear accountability channel must be created and continuously audited, with reports sent to the National Assembly.
