This followed the passage of the bill by the House of Assembly last week, which removes term limit for the chairmen and members of local government caretaker committees.
Governor WIKE also signed into law the Rivers State Administration of Criminal Justice Bill number-seven of 2015, as passed by the House of Assembly.
According to a statement released by the Media Assistant to the Governor, the two bills are meant to promote good governance of the state.
The statement quoted Governor WIKE saying over the weekend at the Government House in Port Harcourt, that the new Local Government Law will give the governor the leverage to extend the appointments of the caretaker committees up to nine months.
Governor WIKE said that the extension of the tenure of the caretaker committees was aimed at ensuring stability in the administration of the councils.
He dismissed the criticism against the new law as unfounded, stressing that members of the local government caretaker committees are not elected officials.
Governor WIKE said once council officials are elected, such would stay for three years and for a maximum of two terms.
The Rivers State Governor said APC members who are criticizing the amendment have forgotten so soon that they passed laws in two minutes while they were at the State Assembly.
For the Rivers State Administration of Criminal Justice Law; Governor WIKE said it would help the state to fight crime and maintain law and order.
