Some residents of Port Harcourt have said they will not participate in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for August 30. Their decision is based on the short notice given by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for the conduct of the polls.
The residents criticized the timing of the announcement, saying it does not allow for adequate preparation or public awareness.
In response, the National Legal Adviser of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Henry Ekine, advised RSIEC to heed the concerns of the electorate and consider rescheduling the elections. He emphasized the importance of inclusivity and transparency in any democratic process.
Meanwhile, the Young Progressive Party (YPP) has publicly distanced itself from the Rivers State Coalition of Political Parties. The party’s Vice Chairman in the Rivers West Senatorial District, Obrasua Johnbull, told journalists that YPP is a fully registered member of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and has no affiliation with any political coalition.
He also cautioned the public against dealing with one Prince Harry, who he said is not authorized to act on behalf of the YPP.
