The National Rescue Mission has strongly condemned the actions of the previous administration in Emohua Local Government Area (LGA) for implementing an irrevocable standing payment order (ISPO) totaling over 6 billion naira.
In a statement issued yesterday, the group described the decision as a misplacement of priorities that threatens the financial stability and operational lifespan of the local government. The ISPO mandates a monthly deduction of more than 200 million naira directly from Emohua LGA’s allocation at source, raising concerns over its sustainability.
Dapasisi Oyibo, Chairman of the National Rescue Mission, expressed alarm that such a financial obligation is unsustainable and severely undermines the local government’s ability to deliver essential services to residents. He criticized the decision as a blatant disregard for the socio-economic realities facing the community, where many residents grapple with poverty, hunger, and insecurity.
Oyibo called on the Sole Administrator of Rivers State to intervene urgently, urging the exploration of legal and financial remedies to halt or reverse the arrangement. He also called on anti-corruption agencies and financial regulatory bodies to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding this transaction to ensure accountability and transparency.
The group emphasized that safeguarding the financial health of local governments is crucial for sustainable development and effective service delivery in Rivers State.
