SERAP and NGE Call for Halt to Cybercrimes Act Misuse Against Journalists

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have jointly called for an immediate end to the alleged abuse of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015 against journalists and media houses in Nigeria.

In a joint statement, the civil society organization and the professional body for editors expressed deep concern over the increasing use of the Act to target journalists, which they argue stifles press freedom and undermines democratic principles.

SERAP and NGE highlighted instances where the Cybercrimes Act has been purportedly used to harass, intimidate, and prosecute journalists for their reporting, particularly concerning critical or investigative pieces. They contend that certain provisions of the Act are being applied in a manner inconsistent with constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and the press.

The organizations urged the relevant authorities, including law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, to desist from using the Act to suppress dissenting voices or impede the legitimate work of journalists. They emphasized the crucial role of a free and independent press in holding power accountable and informing the public.

The statement also called for a review of the Cybercrimes Act to ensure its provisions are not vague or overly broad and that they align with international human rights standards regarding freedom of expression. SERAP and NGE stressed the importance of creating a safe and conducive environment for journalists to carry out their duties without fear of arbitrary arrest or prosecution.

The demand by SERAP and NGE adds to the growing concerns among civil society groups and media stakeholders in Nigeria regarding the shrinking civic space and the challenges faced by journalists in carrying out their profession. The organizations reiterated their commitment to advocating for the protection of press freedom and the rights of journalists in the country.
