Al-Ahly of Egypt on Tuesday defeated their Cameroonian counterparts Mayo Kani Evolution 3-0 in the round of 16 to secure their spot in the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2025 African Women’s Volleyball club championship.
The match played at the indoor hall of the Moshood Abiola National stadium in Abuja, saw Ahly ladies displaying their talents and winning all the three sets in a straight roll.
The Egyptians took the first set 25-17 with quick movement and distribution of the ball around the court.
The young Cameroonians defended well on the backcourt to save a number of balls.
It was again a difficult pattern for the Egyptians in the second set as they contested every point.
A number of hitting and serving mistakes from both teams didn’t change how close it was as Al-Ahly took the last few points to win 25-19.
It was fairly close in the beginning of the third set as the Cameroonians got a good swipe out although Al-Ahly found more holes in the defence line of the Cameroonians to lead 13-10.
Mayo Kani Evolution had some brilliant spikes, but Al-Ahly took the set 25-15 to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
Speaking after the match, the team captain Khalifat Mayar, commended her teammates and lauded the coach for the strategy adopted in the match,
“We discussed our approach with the wings, and it paid off. “We’ve been focusing on the championship from the start, and our training and daily discussions have been key to our success.
“We have a target of winning the trophy again because the players and the coaches have plans that will yield positive results,” Khalifat said.
Al-Ahly won all their matches in Pool C. They were grouped alongside Kenya Commercial Bank Volleyball Club, Volleyball Club La LOI, from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Soccocim of Senegal.
The tournament has sixteen teams participating in the championship that started on April 1 and will end on April 14.
