The Director, Africa Centre for Disease Control, Dr John Nkengasong, who disclosed this during the virtual weekly press briefing on COVID-19 on Thursday, said by January, the number of vaccines being released will be more than twenty five million per month.
The vaccine supplies, according to the AU, will help Africa reach its target of vaccinating at least 60 per cent of the population, to contain the spread of COVID-19.
The AU said the first monthly shipments will arrive in several member states, adding that shipments will continue in August for a total of six point four million doses
Former AU Chairperson and President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, described the development as a momentous step forward in Africa’s efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of its people.
