150 inmates released from Port Harcourt prison

The exercise which was carried out by three Chief Magistrates, was in compliance with the directives by the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi during the goal delivery exercise at the Nigerian Maximum Correctional Center, Port Harcourt, on 19th of August as part of effort to decongest the facility.

Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiowhor reports that forty-six inmates were released last Friday, sixty-two were released on Monday, while forty-two inmates were released yesterday, bringing the total number of beneficiaries of the process to one hundred and fifty including two females.

Chief Magistrate, Menenen Poromon, who addressed the freed inmates at the end the exercise, commended the Chief Judge of the state for the initiative and cautioned the released inmates against any act that could bring them back to the correctional centre.

Some of the released inmates who spoke to newsmen after the court session, thanked the judiciary especially the Chief Judge for the initiative and promised never to go back to crime as they reunite with the society.

Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simon Amadi is expected to lead his team on a second phase of goal delivery at the Port Harcourt Maximum Correctional Center on resumption from court vacation.
