Lewis Hamilton admitted he had a "very bad day at the office" after dropping from pole position to finish sixth in the Hungarian GP on Sunday.

Starting from pole position, the world champion fell to fourth place at the first corner after being passed by the Ferraris of Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen as well as Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Sir Dave Brailsford says accusations of doping from pundits and spectators spurred Chris Froome and Team Sky on to victory at the Tour France.

Froome emerged triumphant for the second time in three years on Sunday and it was a third success in four years for Team Sky.

In the Golf rankings released yesterday, there were  no changes at the top with Jordan Spieth still less than a point away from world No 1 Rory McIlory, although the pair could switch places should Spieth win next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Jerzy Janowicz and Albert Ramos-Vinolas are the highest profile players to win their first-round matches at the Hamburg Open yesterday.

World No 51 Janowicz, the big-serving Pole, defeated Taro Daniel 6-4 6-3 to safely secure his passage into the next round.

Spanish authorities yesterday, moved to fine FC Barcelona €66 000 and Athletic Bilbao €18 000 over last season's Cup final where fans of the Catalan and Basque sides whistled Spain's King Felipe VI.

The state Higher Sports Council proposed the sanctions for "behaviour whose aim was to transform the sporting event into a stage for political demands through intolerant acts".

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has joined Belgian champions KAA Gent on a three-year deal.

The 21-year-old defender who featured for FC Dordrecht on loan last season in the Dutch Eredivise will feature alongside his compatriot Moses Simon in this season’s UEFA Champions League competition.

Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal winger Theo Walcott is on the verge of signing a new contract with the FA Cup winners.

Walcott’s current deal expires at the end of the forthcoming season and talks over an extension had dragged on without a successful conclusion for several months.
