SIX POINT NINE MAGNITUDE EARTH QUAKE HITS INDONESIA
Close to one hundred people are reported to have died following an earthquake that hit the Indonesian resort island of Lombok.
Reports say rescue workers found chaos and destruction across Lombok after a magnitude six point nine earthquake hit the area, causing an exodus of tourists.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency has so far confirmed ninety-one deaths, but said the toll was expected to rise as information came in from areas where thousands of buildings collapsed or were badly damaged, especially in the north.
The military said it was sending in a vessel with medical aid, supplies and logistical support for the island, while the Indonesian Red Cross reported that a woman who was assisted to give birth after the quake named the baby boy ‘Gempa’, which means earthquake.
More than one hundred and thirty aftershocks have also been recorded since the quake struck on Sunday morning, and a tsunami warning was also issued but lifted after a few hours.
