The European Union has ruled out playing any role in the evolving crisis over Spain’s Catalan region.

The President of the European Council, DONALD TUSK said there was no room or space for any kind of mediation or international initiative or action.
TUSK was speaking at a joint news conference with EU Commission President JEAN-CLAUDE JUNCKER.
The UE position was made public hours after Spain said it was beginning the process of imposing direct rule on the autonomous Catalan region.
Other European leaders, including Germany's ANGELA MERKEL and France's EMMANUEL MACRON, have already thrown their support behind Madrid ahead of an EU Council summit.
Reports say the issue of Catalonia is not in the agenda of the summit.
