The Rivers State Government has confirmed that some persons, including officials in the Ministry of Education, have been trying to derail efforts to sanitise the operations of private schools in the state.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic Media, SIMOEN NWAKAUDU.

The Government House spokesman said it was observed that some proprietors of unapproved private schools whose institutions have been marked for closure have been going behind the back in a bid to escape the clampdown.

He further noted that the unnamed proprietors had resorted to bribing top officials of the State Ministry of Education to have their schools re-certified without following due process.

The spokesman said based on the development, Governor NYESOM WIKE has warned the affected proprietors of unapproved schools to desist from bribing top officials of the Education Ministry.

He warned that any proprietor involved in the illegality is doing so at personal risk, adding that only the Rivers State Governor has the authority to re-certify any of the illegal schools marked for closure by 1st of September.

The statement also noted that investigation has been conducted to ascertain the officials and proprietors involved in the alleged bribery scam, and that those indicted shall face the full weight of the law.

Our correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA spoke with a source involved with the Private Schools Proprietor's Association who confirmed that negotiations were ongoing to reverse the action of the state government.
